Faculty of Information Technology and Design

Organizational concept of the Faculty of Information Technology and Design (FITD) at the University of Business Studies Banja Luka is based on the first cycle study programs carried out in a three-year or four-year study program in the field of Graphic Design and Computer and Information Technology. Also, it is oriented towards organizing master (4+1) and doctoral studies in the field of Design and Information Technology and Systems.

Mission and Vision
The very postulate for initiative and development of this organizational unit, apart from the needs of society, is the integration of art and information technology in creating products and establishing communication in order to meet the needs of people. Design finds its application in the society, in all aspects of human activity and as a means of processing and transmission of information has become an integral aspect of human life.

Following the process of development and implementation of design study programs at the universities within our region and surrounding area led to a conclusion implying questions/problems not only of methodical-theoretical nature, but of material as well – from space to the equipment. Design, as a cultural phenomenon in the western world since the year of 1989, has encountered dynamic changes, especially in the sphere of creating new communication and production technologies, thus making it hard to follow. Surely, design study programs will be facing one of the major challenges in the future when finding adequate educational and didactic model appropriate to the needs of the whole society.

Respecting the present changes and adaptations of curriculums, oriented towards finding links between certain collegiums, it is appropriate to identify the intended profile of the study program in design.

Methodological and didactic system of the Faculty of Design will direct its work towards developing critical and creative consciousness of students. Design is a discipline inevitably involved in production of goods as well as of meanings, which justifies its remarkable influence in the formation of social and general human environment. Therefore, training and educating designers must take into consideration various factors and combine them into functional and methodological entirety.

First of all, education of designers aims to inform students regarding rational critical methods of research and analysis but also to facilitate students acquisition of the basic characteristics of form, seeing and communication. Furthermore, after choosing the study program of Graphic Design at the Faculty of Design, the program is segmented together with mutual social and humanistic basis and values, which make the core essence in future position of designers in the modern world, especially in the ethical position of design in relation to the complex problems of civilization, material production and mass consumption.

The aim of the curriculum of the Faculty of Information Technology and Design is to facilitate students acquisition of theoretical, professional and artistic knowledge, technical characteristics of materials, constructions and manufacturing technologies, enabling one for independent creative work and critical analysis of a task needed for a successful synthesis of a project.

The Faculty of Design particularly emphasizes and implements the importance of local social and economic aspects of production, because it indicates the entire range of possible ways in creating different kinds of products, including mass production and craft production respectively. In addition, the faculty recognizes the importance of education with reference to ecological problems, material resources and planet pollution.

If it manages to preserve the social and humanistic basis, and with developed scientific research, artistic and creative component, the Faculty of Design could make a significant contribution to the social environment in the future, although, in its five years of operation, it has already contributed in a considerable extent.

In the near future, the exchange of different kinds of information and goods will be possible via the Internet, and the design is and will be a visual instrument with which the exchange will mainly take place.

Means of mass communication have great power and role, because they use information with the intention of becoming a means of creating public opinion. Design, as a means of mass communication, simultaneously and equally affects the production, distribution and consumption. Design, as a designing and living culture, not only forms functional products, but also the social processes in which the user is an active participant. The importance and role of design in contemporary society of mass communications can be achieved by its ability to improve spreading information, deepening the universal nature of human and conducts intercultural cooperation.

Accordingly, the mission of this faculty is to contribute to the continuous training of personnel involved in design and implementation of creative design in the modern technological conditions. In addition, such trained personnel can and must contribute to the ongoing promotion of creativity in this field.

Promotion and dissemination of ideas of European integration by organizing expert scientific research and interdisciplinary teaching process encourages faster turn of our country into the European Union, in terms of newly profiled management personnel of the University.

Therefore, the vision must have the contours of contents, and every other creative opportunity for better implementation of programs of study and a framework as for the practical training of young people, as well as for their progress in the professional creation.

The vision is oriented towards the profiling of highly skilled personnel, masters and PhD students in the field of design who use their knowledge and skills to contribute to faster integration of the EU Member States, as well as the Republic of Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina, from the standpoint of practical implementation of new knowledge on the principles of the Bologna process.
