The Faculty of Journalism and Communication (FNK) at the University of Business Studies began operating in the school year 2007/2008 addressing the needs for higher education in the field of media industry, communication science and practical humanistic branches that are rapidly developing in the modern society.
Due to the study program that focuses on contemporary media industry, practical programs for journalists and applied communicational sciences, the Faculty gained a good reputation within the field of media industry in northwest Bosnia. Our students and graduates became journalists, editors and PR people working for the most popular media companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina because they recognized the quality of teaching program at this faculty, successfully implementing it in practice and daily work.
Learning about journalism and media communication is similar to working in this industry. Both offer exciting, diverse and challenging experiences fast to learn and change – faster than in any other profession. Thus, the modern study programs of this field must not only follow all changes but ensure critical thinking and informing the public as well. All students who choose this vocation as their future or present profession, have the opportunity to learn about skills of journalistic writing, research or reporting, as well as analytical approach to this profession, respecting the high standards of their expected work and standards of a society, as a whole.
Throughout different subjects, students are introduced to the media industry and communication sciences, focusing on communication between people and the role of language both in communication and media. Courses are suitable for young high-school graduates as well as for those already working in the field of media, marketing or communications with the wish to expand their knowledge.
The Faculty offers students the opportunity to acquire professional skills in journalism and communication and to improve their knowledge of the media industry. For those who are already employed in the media, it offers to enhance their theoretical understanding of this sector and employment opportunities. For young students with youthful vigor and enthusiasm for learning about media and communication sciences, it facilitate students acquisition of knowledge needed for careers in this modern industry.
Respecting the opportunity to gain knowledge during a three-year program in the following areas of mass media (press, radio and television), using language and photography as means of communication, analyzing computer based communication (internet), new generation of web technology, skills in business and public relation communications, the Faculty of Journalism and Communication prepares students for further education and research work within the field of media industry and modern communications.
The above mentioned practical elements are fulfilled with theoretical studies about professional journalism, such as historical development of human society and media systems, the importance of visual communication, theories of media, modern organization of media, the value of information, legal regulations, ethical standards, influence of media, media management, etc.
The high quality study program of the Faculty of Journalism and Communication is reflected in the professional scientific staff of the Faculty and other prestigious universities of the region, whose dedication make students more motivated. Classes are held in continual prolific professor-student collaboration and collaboration between students, thus developing skills of teamwork and introducing young students to the world of journalism.
The Faculty provides modern and technologically equipped classrooms that enable students to fully express their work through multimedia presentations, creative design or photography. Thus, we have had numerous exhibitions of photography, held in Banski Dvor, Banja Luka. Also, it is important to mention that scientific, technical and other literature with the latest titles translated into our language, is available in the University library. It is by no means negligible when considering the fact that study and research in the field of media and communications rapidly develop and publish.
At this faculty, during three years of study, students develop their research skills that are of great importance both for investigative journalism and for market, media and information research, which may be relevant in every other area they dedicate to in the future.
Also, with the help of highly professional professors and mentors, employed students have the opportunity to focus on developing their careers and interests in traditional or digital media, public relations or media management. Based on acquired theoretical and practical knowledge during three years of studying, each of the final year students independently works on a graduate thesis, defends it in front a commission and acquires a Bachelor degree in Journalism.
Since many of our students are already employed, it positively influences younger colleagues. With the knowledge and skills acquired during the first cycle of studies at the Faculty of Journalism and Communication, they possess excellent qualifications to get employed in the media industry, but in many other sectors with the need for information transmission, business presentations and improving relations with customers and media.
